Swimming in the river Aare is one of Bern's most popular summer activities. The Aare.guru website and mobile apps delivers you the most important water and weather informations directly into the palm of you hand. Packaged into a straightforward design with nice typography, Aare.guru is used by thousands of people daily during summer time. Since its launch in 2015 the popularity has steadily grown. The basis of the app is Open Data: The water measurements are provided by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN/BAFU), along with weather measurements by MeteoSwiss. An API by Aare.guru is providing simplified access to the same data for other apps and websites. The significance of the project has been confirmed by the city of Berne which contacted Aare.guru with a feature request providing additional safety related information for swimmers. Implementation is under way in 2019. Aare.guru is run as a non-profit hobbyist project by four bernese designers & developers.
